2. OK Computer, Radiohead (1997)

Radiohead son los Pink Floyd de su generación. Son una banda capaz de ser ampliamente experimental, pero sin perder absoluta accesibilidad (entiéndase “raros” y “buenos”). OK Computer, su tercer álbum, halló a los chicos en la transición de los riffs de tamaño de estadio de The Bends a los blips de dormitorio de Kid A. Es un álbum increíblemente denso sónicamente, que es capaz de evocar algunas asombrosas atmósferas. Revela diferentes detalles dependiendo de si lo oyes con auriculares, o si vas en el coche o si lo pones en el estéreo de tu sala. Por supuesto, todo ello no sería nada si la banda no escribiera grandes melodías: desde la arrolladora, casi épica “Paranoid Android” hasta la titilante caja musical de “No Surprises”. Y es así como surge el concepto global del álbum: una visión de Thom Yorke sobre una sociedad que lucha por estar cada vez menos conectada emocionalmente y más conecatada digitalmente. El dúo guitarresco de Jonny Greenwood y Ed O’Brien se asegura de que no solamente escuches la incómoda voz de Thom, sino también a sentir sus siniestros e inquietantes notas. 10. The Bends, Radiohead (1995)

Se esperaba mucho que el álbum The Bends (1995) de Radiohead, segundo disco de la banda, sería un gran sucesor de Pablo Honey, y las esperanzas no fueron en vano. Producido por John Leckie, The Bends es una obra maestra sónica de rock de varias capas y misteriosos paisajes líricos. Destacando 5 sencillos que llegaron a las listas de popularidad, entre los que se encuentra “Street Spirit (Fade Out),” el primer sencillo de Radiohead en llegar al top 5 en el Reino Unido, The Bends atrajo el amor universal de la crítica, incluso como si las lastimeras y más oscuras letras del cantante Thom Yorke fueran una indicación de la venidera depresión, prueba de que muy posiblemente se encaminara velozmente sobre ese triste camino que lleva al martirio del rock (gracias a Dios que se equivocaron). Comparado con su excelente álbum debut, hay una remarcada madurez en The Bends, a pesar de la continua exploración de Yorke en los males de la sociedad. Paul Rees, editor ejecutivo de Q, mencionó al respecto: “Después de 13 años de haber sido lanzado, la atracción de OK Computer para con Q y sus lectores ha aumentado exponencialmente.” Y añadió: “Tal como lo refleja esta encuesta, nuestros lectores ven a Ok Computer como un punto de referencia con el cual todo otro album es y seguirá siendo contrastado.”

A decir verdad, desde su lanzamiento, ocurrido a mediados de 1997, Ok Computer ha sido bastante aclamado por la crítica, y de hecho la revista Q lo ha colocado en el primer lugar en dos anteriores encuestas: la primera a principios de 1998 como el mejor disco de la historia, y después en 2001, como el mejor de los 50 discos de los últimos 15 años (donde The Bends también apareció en el número 4). Por eso Rees lleva razón al asegurar: “Originalmente [en la revista] lo aclamamos como una obra maestra, [...] y esta opinión jamás hemos considerado modificarla desde entonces.”
